Brain injury victims and their families know how fragile life can be. One moment a person might be comfortably riding in a car, or bicycling through a crosswalk, or working on a ladder to make a house repair. And the next moment could permanently alter the course of a victim’s life.
A story out of Beaufort County is a powerful reminder of the dangers of serious head injuries.
An elderly Bluffton man was driving his golf cart from his house in Sun City Hilton Head to a neighbor’s home when tragedy struck. His cart inexplicably hit a parked car and a small tree, and according to the man’s wife, the collision happened not even a block from the couple’s home.
The man was knocked out of the cart and injured, and he had to be flown to a hospital in Savannah. There the 77-year-old was pronounced dead, and an autopsy in South Carolina later determined that the cause of death was a head injury suffered when the man fell out of the cart.
At the time of a local report, investigators had not determined exactly what caused the collision, which happened just a day before the man and his wife were to celebrate their 52nd anniversary. The woman expressed her hope that her husband’s death would help people to realize the dangers of not wearing seat belts when operating a golf cart on the road.
In recent years, more emphasis has been placed on the risks of brain injuries. Obviously, head injuries can be fatal, or they can seem minor at first but progress in severity over time, requiring extended medical treatment and rehabilitation.
