Being involved in a hit and run incident can be emotionally stressful to the victim, their family and to the driver involved as well. An arrest has been made in the connection with an accident that happened recently in South Carolina. The hit and run incident involving a bicyclist left the victim in critical condition. The victim’s family reported that he has significant brain swelling and needs a respirator to help him breathe.

The accident occurred in the middle of the night at a local intersection. The bicyclist was allegedly hit by the car as he was traveling in the northbound bike lane. Part of the accused’s car was apparently left at the scene and local authorities were able to use that part to track down the vehicle’s registered owner.

The owner of the car, a 26-year-old woman, was arrested in connection with the crime. She has been charged with leaving the scene of the accident and improper lane change. Whether or not she was the one behind the wheel at the time of the incident was not reported. It is unknown if drugs and/or alcohol are contributing factors in the crash.

The driver accused of causing the hit and run is facing felony charges that have serious consequences. South Carolina residents accused of a crime do have the right to defend themselves. A strategic criminal defense could help lessen the negative consequences related to the crime. In this case, it is up to prosecutors to prove that the accused woman was the driver at the time of the incident and guilty of the crime. If they fail in that, charges against her would then be dismissed.
