It is no secret that driving while intoxicated is a felony offense in South Carolina. There are a lot of substances, including drugs and alcohol, which can warrant a DUI charge. While many people are capable of driving with small amounts of these substances in their system, accidents do unfortunately happen, and if the driver responsible has an impairing substance in their system, they could face jail time for the incident.
Recently, an accident in Lexington has very sadly resulted in the death of a motorcyclist. A 43-year-old male motorcyclist was driving along Fish Hatchery Road when he was hit by a truck making a left-hand turn. The motorcyclist unfortunately suffered fatal injuries in the crash and died before he could be transported for medical treatment.
Local authorities arrested the driver deemed responsible for this crash. The 23-year-old male is believed to have been intoxicated at the time of the incident. He has been charged with a felony DUI; it is unknown if any other charges are pending in this matter. It is also unknown if he is being held or if he is out on bond. The accident is still under investigation by South Carolina authorities.
An accident that is caused by an alleged DUI driver can have serious consequences under South Carolina laws. These consequences include a felony charge which carries a sentence including jail and/or prison time and fines if convicted. Anyone faced with DUI accusations may defend themselves in court of law, as is their right, in an effort to gain the best possible result for their situation.
