There have been several drug busts around South Carolina already this year. Local and federal authorities don’t take the use or distribution of illegal drugs lightly, so those accused of involvement in such activity could face some serious charges in drug court. The most recent bust came after what was reported to be a year-long operation by Sumter Police.
Heroin use and distribution has reportedly been on the rise in Sumter County. The drug bust was local authority’s response to this increase. So far, 18 people have been arrested, four of which turned themselves in for their alleged connection with these drug crimes. Police are still looking for one other individual. During this bust, police claim to have confiscated several drugs, including cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin and marijuana, as well as approximately $10,000 in cash.
All those arrested, both male and female with ages ranging from their 20s to 30s, are being held at the county detention center. Bond hearings are pending in each of their cases. Charges against them include possession, trafficking, intent to distribute, violation of gun laws and a host of other related and unrelated charges.
Each of these individuals is protected under South Carolina laws to be considered innocent until proven guilty. Fighting charges in drug court, at a state or federal level, can be a difficult and drawn out process. A strong criminal defense ready to question the relevance or permissibility of any evidence provided can go a long way in the battle for a positive outcome for each of these individuals specific situations.
