What are the consequences of serious head injuries?

South Carolina residents who have been injured in an accident may experience any number of serious injuries. Head injuries are of significant concern, as the results can have life-altering effects on the victim. As with any other injury, the consequences associated with head injuries can vary based on the severity and type of injury suffered.

There are two basic types of head injury -- closed and open. Closed head injuries occur when trauma is inflicted to the head, but the skull bones do not break. An open head injury occurs when the skull is broken, and there is direct damage to the brain. Both can cause issues, though the full impact of a closed head injury may not be immediately apparent.

Injuries to the head can lead to bleeding, tearing and swelling of the brain -- each of which can cause changes to brain function, disability and other subsequent medical problems. While those with open head wounds are generally taken for immediate medical treatment, those with closed head wounds may choose to wait. A list of symptoms and warning signs for a serious head injury can be found through the U.S. National Library of Medicine. When symptoms do begin to present themselves, seeking medical care is advisable.

Head injuries can occur from a number of incidents including falls, recreational activities and even car accidents. Those in South Carolina who have suffered, or lost a loved one, due to a head injury acquired through the negligence of another individual may be entitled to take legal action. Successfully litigated civil claims can result in compensation for any current and future financial damages that result from the injury.
