Compensation possible after single-vehicle car accidents

Multi-car collisions are a common occurrence in South Carolina. However, many more car accidents that occur across the state only involve a single-vehicle. In these instances, those who are injured or -- in the event of fatality -- surviving family members of crash victims may feel there is little they can do, but that is far from the truth. The drivers or car owners may be held responsible for any such incidents, and compensation for losses sustained may be recoverable.

A car carrying two teenagers, and another unidentified individual, crashed in the northwest part of the state recently. The official cause of the accident has not been released. An 18-year-old female, who was a passenger in the automobile, was killed in the crash. Another passenger was injured and flown to a hospital for treatment. The current condition of this individual is unknown.

The driver, a 17-year-old male, was also injured in the wreck. The South Carolina Highway patrol in still investigating this incident. It is unknown if any charges are pending against the driver.

Single-vehicle car accidents that result in the injuries or deaths of passengers are, understandably, devastating for everyone negatively affected. The drivers and owners of these vehicles can be held accountable for the damages suffered by the victims or their surviving family members. In this particular case, the family members of the deceased may file a wrongful death claim on her behalf, in an effort to seek compensation for any financial losses they have personally encountered due to the crash. The injured victim may also seek monetary relief for any economic and non-economic damages incurred. For each claim that is successfully litigated in a South Carolina civil court, compensation may be awarded upon appropriate proof of negligence and documented damages.
