Arrest made in fatal hit and run incident

A Myrtle Beach family struggling with a terrible loss may find some small comfort in the knowledge that an arrest has been made in the death of a 23-year-old woman. The woman was killed when a driver struck her vehicle and then fled the scene of the accident on foot. South Carolina police have arrested a suspect in the case, and he is now charged with hit and run as well as failing to adhere to the duties of a driver who is involved in as serious traffic accident.

The young woman killed in the incident was driving home from a late shift at work when the crash took place. Upon early investigation, police believe that the driver of a Jeep Compass struck her vehicle, causing severe injury. Instead of remaining on the scene to call for help and try to render aid, the driver fled the area on foot.

When a driver is involved in a serious accident, he or she is legally required to remain at the scene and speak with police when they arrive. In a moral sense, a driver who is involved in a serious accident has the obligation to do everything possible to assist the injured party or parties. In this case, it is not known if any action could have saved the young woman’s life, but by fleeing the scene, the driver removed any possibility that she might have been helped or at least comforted by the presence of another human being.

The woman’s family is still in the early stages of the grieving process, and are focused on providing for the needs of her 13-month-old daughter. While nothing can bring back their lost loved one or make their grief disappear, it is hoped that they are able to find some small comfort in the likelihood that the man responsible for the hit and run incident that brought about their loss will be held accountable in a South Carolina criminal court. Should they decide to pursue their own legal action against him, a wrongful death suit could also bring some small measure of justice in the matter.
