South Carolina has a high rate of fatal car accidents

On Behalf of | Dec 5, 2015 | Car Accidents

According to a recent study of all 50 states, South Carolina is ranked one of the worst when it comes to auto collisions. The state ranked higher than the national average in both fatal car accidents and collisions caused by drunk drivers. This is a serious issue, one by which far too many residents have been negatively affected.

The study apparently found that there are approximately16 deaths per 100,000 residents in South Carolina as a result of fatal collisions. The national average is quite a bit lower, coming in at about 10 deaths per 100,000 residents. The number of rural roads in the state may contribute to this higher number, as it is believed that the most dangerous roads in the country are rural roads.

When it comes to alcohol impairment, approximately 72 percent of fatal accidents supposedly involve drunk drivers. In South Carolina, though, this number is quite a bit higher, at 82 percent. In comparing national statistics, all of these numbers place South Carolina as the 8th most dangerous state to drive in the country.

Those who have lost loved ones in fatal car accidents may be entitled to pursue legal claims against the party or parties deemed responsible. If any form of negligence — such as driving while impaired, texting or distracted — is believed to have contributed to a crash, the victim’s family may be able to achieve compensation for their losses. Civil claims that are filed in a South Carolina court and successfully litigated may be awarded monetary judgments for any and all damages that are legally recoverable.
