Mild head injuries can still have serious consequences

Brain injuries are suffered by numerous people in South Carolina and elsewhere every year. It is believed that many of the head injuries seen by medical providers are actually considered mild in nature. However, this does not mean that their lasting effects may not be severe. Some individuals may suffer for years following a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), which can take a serious toll on one's life.

While severe head injuries do occur, the majority of brain injury patients have experienced what are considered to be mild traumatic brain injuries. This means that they have suffered blows to the head which are severe enough to cause a loss of consciousness and/or confusion. While medical scans may look normal following this type of brain injury, physical and mental symptoms might include:

  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Memory loss
  • Depression
  • Visual disturbances

Many individuals who suffer mild TBIs may quickly regain full function and recovery, but there are those whose symptoms may persist for months or even years. In such cases, their lives are drastically changed, as the ability to fully function at home and work can be greatly affected. Extensive medical intervention, including medications, rehabilitation or even surgery, may be necessary to help these individuals cope. However, there is no guarantee of success.

South Carolina residents who have suffered mild head injuries may find themselves struggling physically, emotionally and financially. Those whose injuries are the results of the negligent actions of others may, in accordance with applicable laws, have legal recourse. With the assistance of an experienced attorney, one can file the appropriate legal claims in civil court in an effort to seek damages. Through successful litigation or out-of-court negotiations, compensation for one's losses may be achieved.
