South Carolina wrongful death: 1 killed in hit and run

On Behalf of | Dec 10, 2016 | Wrongful Death

A basketball player for Benedict College in South Carolina recently lost his life in a hit-and-run accident. This incident reportedly occurred Sunday, Dec. 4. The victim’s surviving family members may be entitled to pursue wrongful death actions against the individual deemed responsible in an effort to seek compensation for their losses.

According to a recent report, the victim — a 22-year-old male — was walking on Bluff Road in Columbia when he was struck and killed by a car. Another person with this young man — also a basketball player for Benedict — was injured and transported to a medical facility for treatment. He has already been released from the hospital.

The driver responsible failed to remain at the scene of the accident. She did, however, turn herself in to authorities a few days after the wreck. The 31-year-old female has been arrested and charged with a hit-and-run causing death and a hit-and-run causing injuries. Her bond hearing has already taken place. It is unknown if any further court dates regarding this matter have been scheduled.

Hit-and-run cases can be difficult, especially if those responsible cannot be located. Thankfully, in this case, the driver has been identified, so the surviving family members of the deceased and the injured victim may file civil claims against her in an effort to seek compensation for their losses. Wrongful death and personal injury claims that are successfully litigated in a South Carolina court may be awarded monetary judgments for those damages which are deemed legally recoverable.
