A woman in South Carolina was recently charged for her role in a fatal car crash that occurred in Lexington County. As authorities claim this individual was intoxicated at the time of the collision, she has been charged with a felony DUI, which is standard under the circumstances. This is a serious charge that can have life-altering consequences if a conviction is achieved.
According to a news report, on the evening of Jan. 5, two vehicles collided at an intersection. The driver of one of the cars — a 75-year-old male — was injured in the wreck and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Sadly, he died of his injuries after his arrival. He is said to have suffered blunt force trauma.
The young woman believed responsible for the collision was also injured in the wreck. She was treated at an area hospital, and after her release she was promptly arrested and transported to the county detention center. She has been charged with DUI resulting in death.
If the accused is convicted, she could face a lengthy imprisonment, hefty fines and a variety of other consequences. As with any criminal case in South Carolina, this individual does have the right to defend herself in court. This she can do with the assistance of an experienced criminal defense attorney. While felony DUI cases can be difficult to fight, it is possible to challenge evidence and contest the prosecuting attorney’s case. In doing so, it may be possible to obtain a case dismissal or, at least, minimize any potential penalties.
