A few safety tips for motorcyclists coming to our state

South Carolina draws millions of visitors annually. Many come to vacation in Myrtle Beach, and several others attend our popular fall and spring motorcycle rallies.

However, unfamiliar roads can pose unexpected dangers for motorcycle riders. Here are some tips to help keep you safe.

Wear your helmet

The protection a helmet provides cannot be emphasized enough. In a crash, you must protect your head, or you could sustain a serious brain injury. South Carolina law requires motorcyclists and their passengers under the age of 21 to wear approved helmets, meaning those that meet the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard FMVSS 218. If you are going to purchase a new helmet, you will find the DOT symbol on the back of approved models. Helmets that meet the DOT standards feature a thick lining made of polystyrene foam and a sturdy chin strap. These helmets weigh about three pounds.

Choose appropriate clothing

Wear sturdy shoes or boots—boots are the best choice—that cover your ankles. In a crash, your ankles and feet are vulnerable to injury. You should also wear gloves to protect your hands. Long sleeves and pants help protect your arms and legs from painful road rash. Leather and heavy denim are the best options for clothing, including jackets and vests. These materials are not only protective, but they also help to prevent dehydration. Motorists and other motorcycle riders will see you more easily if you wear bright colors. For example, your helmet could be a bright yellow. If you plan to ride after dark, put reflective tape on the back of your jacket and in strategic locations on your bike.

Seek local help

If you find yourself involved in a motorcycle accident while visiting in our area, seek medical attention promptly. Your well-being is of primary importance, but a doctor’s report will also tie any injuries you may have directly to the crash. You can also rely on local legal assistance when it is time to file a claim for insurance compensation.

Stay safe

As all motorcycle riders know, a crash is always a possibility. However, wearing a DOT-approved helmet and protective garments and footwear can help keep you right side up so you can enjoy your visit to South Carolina.
