Why do bar fights happen?

On Behalf of | Jul 27, 2021 | Injuries

You just want to go out for a few drinks with friends. You’re on vacation. You want to have a good time. You figured it would be a fun, relaxing evening.

Unfortunately, while at the bar, someone attacked you. Everything happened very quickly and you wound up in the hospital with some pretty serious injuries. Looking back, you can’t even believe it. Why did the bar fight happen and how have you found yourself in this situation?

Pride is often a major issue

Naturally, alcohol consumption is the root of the problem. If the person who attacked you was intoxicated, odds are they were not doing something they would have done while sober. Their judgment was impaired. Their impulse control was gone. Some people are known for getting more aggressive when drunk.

However, a sense of pride is also often a factor. Men’s magazines have even run articles about how people who are trying to get out of a fight are worried about their ego. They don’t want to look like they’re afraid. They’re specifically concerned with how other people will see them. To a sober person, this sense of pride is clearly misplaced and wanting to fight for pride comes across as outdated and foolish, but that’s not how someone sees it when they’ve been drinking. It could be that the person who attacked you also didn’t want to fight — but they didn’t want to walk away even more.

What can you do now?

Needless to say, you don’t deserve to be attacked and injured by someone in a bar. Now you have high medical bills, and it’s important to know if you have a right to compensation for your injuries and losses. You don’t have to figure things out on your own; an experienced advocate can help.
